Historical Note

Cumberland Road, also known as the National Road, originally was authorized to be constructed from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1809. In the 1820s an expansion to the Mississippi River near Saint Louis was approved, although later the terminus was relocated to Jefferson City, Missouri.
