Administrative History
Wendel's Radio and Electric Service began as a "service" in the late 1920s under the auspices of the Hub Music and Supply Company on North Main Street in Crown Point, Indiana. Harold Wendel was a radio and electronic expert. He was one of two boys born in Illinois to Henry and Louise D. Wendel.
After Wendel's high school education, electronics led him to build the first local radio station in Crown Point during 1926. A broadcasting station license was given to him for the purpose of "carrying on of general broadcasting for public information, instruction, amusement or entertainment." The station was located at 317 E. North Street and known as WLBT.
In 1929, Wendel became affiliated with Hub Music, repairing radios and various electronics. During 1933, financial activities were recorded for Wendel's Radio and Electric Service. It was located in the Kilbourn building at 115 North Main Street in Crown Point, Indiana. In January 1952, the service store was located in a new building at 600 North Main Street. By the late 1950s, Wendel's accepted only selective service commitments. Due to health reasons, Wendel semiretired in 1952. He continued to renew his electrical license into 1982 and did minor repairs using his home address of 203 East North Street until his death on October 20, 1983. Wendel is buried in the Lowell Memorial Park Cemetery in Lowell, Indiana.
