This collection includes reports from the Board of State House Commissioners in Indianapolis, Indiana ranging from 1881 to 1884 and a scrapbook of newspaper articles, state documents, and documents from 1878 to 1888, regarding the building of the Indiana Statehouse.

Administrative History

In 1877, the Indiana General Assembly passed an act to erect another, more permanent structure. The Board of State House Commissioners was created by the act selected the plans of Indianapolis architect Edwin May. Adolph Scherrer, May's chief draftsman, succeeded his employer as supervising architect when May died in 1880 and completed the new State House in 1888 for a cost within the initial estimate of $2 million.
