Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a photocopied diary of Thomas W. Barnett when he lived in Union Township, Fulton County, Indiana, from 1861 – 1870.

Diary in folder 1, is written on pages from The Franklin Almanac and Diary for the Year 1861, which consists of 2 pages per month with a space for each date, the first page also showing sunrise, sunset, moon rise and moon setting time for each time zone in the United States, as well as the phases of the moon. This is a daily diary with entries for each day of daily life for a farmer. The diary in folders 2-5 consist of daily entries on ledger-type sheets.

Morgan is mentioned in entry dated July 13, 1863. Fulton County’s payments for recruits for the Army is mentioned Feb. 24th, 1863. The Great Peace Democratic Convention is mentioned on Aug. 29, 1864. Michael [Barnett] was to be mustered out of the U.S.A. Service mentioned on Sept. 21, 1864.

Many local weddings, births, and deaths are mentioned.

Biographical Note

Thomas W. Barnett was born in Ohio, June 13, 1817. He served as County Commissioner for Fulton County from 1873-1875. He died Oct. 29, 1882.
