Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of Carl and John M. Staudt's World War I letters and postcards sent to their parents and brother, Lawrence, in Indianapolis, Indiana and to their sister and brother-in-law, Joseph H. and Bertha Brown, in Brownsburg, Indiana from Camp Sherman, Ohio, Camp Merritt, New Jersey, Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York, and from Belgium and France ranging from 1918 to 1919. The collection also contains two postcards sent by Carlos and Clarence Brown, brothers of Joseph H. Brown, letters from family sent to the brothers during the war, and news clippings regarding family members (1881).

Biographical Note
Carl Staudt and his brother, John M. Staudt, Jr., were from Indianapolis, Indiana and served as privates in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War I. Carl was born January 7, 1894 and John M., Jr. was born the following year on December 5, 1895 in Seymour, Indiana to John M. (1860-1940) and Luella (1860-1932) Staudt. Their sister, Bertha (1891-1970) married Joseph H. Brown (1891-1967) and they lived in Brownsburg, Indiana. They also had a brother named Lawrence (1892-1939).
Carl served in Supply Company, 70th Artillery, Coast Artillery Corps (C.A.C.) in New York and France. John served with the Headquarters (HQ) Company, 363 Infantry Regiment in Belgium and France. Both brothers survived the war and returned to Indianapolis. Carl married Anna McDermott (1896-1972) around 1924 and died on February 23, 1938. John never married and died in September, 1964.
