Historical Note

Masonic orders or lodges can trace their history back to the Freemasons of the fourteenth century. The Free and Accepted Masons have had around 400 Masonic lodges in Indiana, which represented 50,000 Masons, while the Knights Templar, a Christian-oriented fraternal order, have had fifty-six different constituent commanderies with approximately 7,000 members in the state. Members of orders have participated in a wide range of activities including charitable outreach such as the Scottish Rite’s Children’s Dyslexia Center. Traditionally, Masonic orders have accepted only men, but some, like the Order of the Eastern Star, have welcomed both men and women to their ranks.

Temple Lodge No. 47 of the Free and Accepted Masons was chartered in 1843.

The Greencastle Chapter No. 22 of the Royal Arch Masonry was chartered in 1857.

Greencastle Commandery No. 11 of the Knights Templar was chartered in 1867.

Greencastle Chapter No. 255 of the rder of the Eastern Star was chartered in 1900.

The Indiana Consistory of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite was chartered in 1863.
