This collection includes a personal, handwritten letter from Jacob P. Peterson of Greene County, Ohio, to John E. Horney in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, on September 9, 1865. Biographical / Historical
Jacob P. Peterson was born on March 13, 1814, to Eliza Barron (Hagler) (1769–1851) and Phillip Peterson (1769–1851) in Virginia. He married Mary Anna Peterson (1815–1875), daughter of George (1774–1872) and Elizabeth Boblet (1781–1847), in Greene County, Ohio on November 4, 1834. Together, they had three daughters: Maria Jane Shambaugh, Lydia A. Whiteman, and Sidney Emily Davis. A farmer by trade, Peterson became the administrator of his father-in-law George Boblet’s estate upon his passing on June 11, 1872. Jacob P. Peterson died on March 16, 1876, and he is buried alongside his wife in Maple Corner Cemetery in Maple Corner, Greene County, Ohio.

John E. Horney was born on October 8, 1832, to Ann Mariah (Boblet) (1809–1847) and Paris Horney (1807–1877). On August 26, 1857, he married Nancy Virginia Smith (1835–1905) in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and they had seven children: Samuel Elgan, William Paris, Albert Samuel, Oliver Perry Morton, Zerelda “Zella” Ann, Grant Ulysses, and John Edd “Eddie.” Horney died on March 31, 1872 at the age of thirty-nine, and is buried at Horney Cemetery in Tippecanoe County.
Elizabeth Horney (1835–1872), John E. Horney's younger sister, married Israel Daugherty (1829–1892).
