Scope and Contents

This collection includes five scrapbooks created by members of the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs for state and national contests and the scrapbooks include correspondence, newspaper clippings, music programs, photographs, and yearbooks ranging from 1929 to 1948. The Crawfordsville Music Club’s scrapbook won first prize in a 1930 contest conducted by theIndianapolis News; the Greensburg High School Junior Club scrapbook won an honorable mention in the 1931 state contest; Indiana’s 1931 junior department won the National Federation’s junior scrapbook contest; and the Federation’s 1939 senior (adult) scrapbook received an honorable mention at the National Federation’s biennial convention. The 1944-1948 scrapbook includes sections on music for wounded soldiers and Indiana composers and includes the organization’s 1936 booklet Indiana Composers, Native and Adopted.

Biographical / Historical

The Indiana Federation of Music Clubs (INFMC) is a state branch of the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC). The NFMC is a nonprofit organization founded in 1898 to promote and support American music, performers and music education. The INFMC was organized in 1920 and membership included senior, junior and juvenile organizations of choirs, bands, orchestras, glee clubs, and music schools. The INFMC is still active today and the group's objective is to "bring into working relations with one another, music clubs, other music organizations and individuals in the State of Indiana directly or indirectly associated with music activities for the purposes of developing high musical standards; aiding and encouraging music education; promoting American music and artists, and cooperating with the National Federation of Music Clubs in its specific plans for the advancement of music."

Custodial History

The scrapbooks in this collection were donated to the Indiana State Library by the Crawfordsville Music Club on 1930/05/15, Verna Palmer Sterling on 1931/06/09 and 1931/10/31, and by others. The collection was transferred to Rare Books and Manuscripts from the Indiana Division in 2017.
