Biographical Note

Roberta Lee Brooker was born on December 1, 1951 to Robert Munro (1918-2000) and Ruth Madeleine (Gott) Brooker (1917-2001). Her father was a chemistry professor at the University of Indianapolis for over 30 years. Brooker attended Harry Wood High School in 1966, then Emmerich Manual High School in the following years.

She attended the University of Indianapolis (known as Indiana Central College until 1975) and attained a B.A. in English before earning a master's degree in Library Science from Indiana University. She also served on the alumni board at the University of Indianapolis for several years.

Brooker worked at the Indiana State Library for nearly 20 years, in the positions of reference librarian, Indiana State Data Center coordinator, Library Development Office staff, and associate direcotr of public services. In 2007, she became the State Librarian, though she had been the interim library director since 2005. Brooker held the position until 2013 when she retired.
