Scope and Contents

This collection comprises two items, an oversized soldier's record for Arthur Douglass dated June 1, 1902 and signed by Captain Cecil Stuart at Fort Riley, Kansas and a soldiers memorial broadside for Troop C, 4th Cavalry, U.S. Army for foreign service in the Philippine-American War during 1899-1900. The latter includes a roster and "record of events" for the troop. Both include photographic images along the edges.

Biographical Note

Arthur Henry Douglass was born to Henry and Lettie (Rice) Douglass in Indiana on April 22, 1880. He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana and worked as a laborer. He enlisted as a private in Troop C, 4th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army in Terre Haute, Indiana on June 2, 1899. Serving in the Philippine-American War, his troop arrived in Manila on September 29, 1899. Douglass served in the following actions: General Lawton's expedition (September 10-December 15, 1899); General Schan's Southern Raid (January 3-February 15, 1900; and General Sumner's Mountain Raid (February 24-March 3, 1900). He continued to serve in the Philippines until August 28, 1901. He was discharged on June 1, 1902 in Fort Riley, Kansas. Douglass married Martha "Mattie" Stewart on June 8, 1904 in Terre Haute and they had a daughter, Catherrine Stewart (1905-1996). The family moved to Indianapolis where Douglass worked as a railroad conductor for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway. He died from bronchial asthma on January 28, 1932 in Indianapolis and was buried in Washington Park East Cemetery.
