Historical Note
The Union Track Railway was created in 1850. In 1853, the name was changed to the Indianapolis Union Railway Company and a union depot was built for the use of multiple railroads coming into Indianapolis. The incorporation took place in 1872 by an agreement between the Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis Railroad Company; the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway Company; the Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railway Company; the Pittsburgh Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway Company; the Terre Haute and Indianapolis Railroad Company; and the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad Company.
The Indianapolis Union Railway Company was created to ease and streamline the exchanges of freight and passengers between the railroad companies. The incorporation was officially recognized by the General Assembly on March 2, 1885. The Union Railway provided terminal facilities and switch services for the railroads. During 1888, the union deport was replaced by the Union Station.
In April 1976 the Indianapolis Union Railway's ownership changed. Penn Central, or Conrail, became the new owner.
