Historical Note

The Indianapolis Times newspaper began in 1888 as the Sun. The paper was bought and sold multiple times and had several names changes. In 1922, Scripps-Howard purchased the newspaper and changed the name from the Indiana Daily Times to the Indianapolis Times. Over the next forty years, the newspaper became known for its advocacy on behalf of the public. It exposed the Ku Klux Klan and its influence on Indiana state politics in the 1920s and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. It also organized the Clothe-A-Child campaign during the Great Depression, exposed highway scandals in the 1950s, and helped identify jobs for the unemployed in the early 1960s. Despite its successful journalism, the paper ran its final issue on October 11, 1965 and suspended publication. Its final daily circulation was 89,374 and its Sunday circulation was 101,000.
