This collection consists of correspondence and papers from Bernard C. Gavit in Indiana from 1935 to 1941, regarding legal proceedings for the state of Indiana, correspondence with justices of the peace around the state, and maps and statistics on crime in different parts of the state.

Biographical / Historical

Bernard Campbell Gavit was born on October 12, 1893, in Saginaw, Michigan to John A. and Emma Dolly (Campbell) Gavit. His family later moved to Hammond, Indiana where he grew up. Gavit earned his B.A. from Wabash College in 1915 before moving on to attend University of Chicago Law School, graduating in 1920. He married Nettie Sue Bledsoe and they had one son, Albert McQueen. Gavit worked for his father’s law firm in Hammond, Indiana for almost a decade before take a position to teach as an assistant professor at the University of Oregon in 1928. Gavit returned to Indiana in 1929 upon accepting a full-time faculty position at Indiana University School of Law. He was dean of the law school from 1933 to 1951. Gavit died on January 16, 1954 at the age of 60.
