Historical Note
Toll roads in Indiana were authorized by acts approved by the Indiana General Assembly in May 1852 and February 1865. Following the passage of the latter act, gravel road companies were organized in Johnson County to construct and improve the highways. By 1870, most of the main roads in the county were under the control of these companies as toll roads. The Trafalgar and Brown County Gravel Road Company was established in June 1878 and was granted right of way by the county commissioners. The company's road was to extend about 4 3/4 miles south of Trafalgar to within about a mile of the Brown County line. The county’s toll road system worked well for several years, but by 1885, people wanted the roads to be maintained as a free gravel road system and the last of the county toll roads was abandoned in 1887.
