Biographical Note

Joel Wilmington McGrew was born on May 23, 1824 to James Blackburn (1781-1836) and Isabella (McRae) McGrew (1782-1866) in Pennsylvania. He moved to Putnam County, Indiana where he worked as a carpenter, merchant, and later, farmer. He married Sarah M. Peck (1827–1887) on December 18, 1848 in Putnam County, Indiana and they had a daughter, Catherine I. (1849-1943). He was appointed postmaster of Putnamville, Indiana on February 6, 1860. McGrew joined the Union army after the outbreak of the American Civil War. He was appointed captain of Company I, 27th Indiana Regiment on August 30, 1861. McGrew died on August 29, 1892 in Greencastle, Indiana and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
