Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence and documents of the Drummond and Hudson families ranging from 1893 to 1966. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters sent to David P. Drummond after his move from Janesville, Wisconsin to Indianapolis, Indiana (1939-1942) and letters sent to him by friends, family, and girlfriends while he served in the United States Navy during World War II (1942-1945). Some of the letters included photographs and newspaper clippings about acquaintances serving in the war, many of which were from his friend Ralph Middleton. Along with business correspondence and documents of David J. Drummond, the collection also includes Della Compton's correspondence and family documents (1917-1957); Hubert and Thelma Hudson's personal and business papers (1944-1960); a variety of greeting cards and miscellaneous product information, catalogs, and booklets (1939-1953).

A few items of note in the collection are a 1940 Shortridge High School graduation program; a paper sent with a July 27, 1942 letter titled "The Martin System of Handwriting Analysis"; the January 19, 1944 edition of the Navy newspaper the Quonset Scout; a copy of the booklet, "Walter Doesn't Live Here Any More" by Clarence Walker (circa 1940s); a copy of the 1950 Parents' Magazine Baby Care Manual; and the pamphlet, "Food for All Ages" by the Purdue University Agricultural Extension Service Division of Home Economics (circa 1950s). There is also a photograph album that belonged to Thelma Hudson dated 1940-1942 and undated (V430).

Biographical Note

David Park Drummond was born on June 20, 1922 to David J. (1890-1976) and Floye (Drake) Drummond (1890-1981) and spend much of his childhood in Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1939, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. His father was a salesman and then worked for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for 18 years. Drummond graduated from Shortridge High School in 1940 and attended Butler University for a time. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1942-1945) and was stationed at Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in Miami County, Indiana; Quonset Point, Rhode Island; Banana River, Florida; and San Francisco, California. Drummond married Dorothy Jean Moser on August 31, 1946 and they had 4 children and later divorced. He was a distributor for Paymaster Service Corporation when he passed away at the age of 55 on December 8, 1977.

Hubert Hudson was born November 22, 1921 in Pulaski County, Kentucky to Virgil and Emma Hudson. He married Thelma Dean Compton and they had 3 sons and later divorced. Thelma was born in Pulaski County on April 21, 1924 to Cornelius and Della Compton (1892-1973). The Hudsons moved to Indiana and owned the Hudson Sales Company in Attica during the early 1950s. Hudson later worked for the Harrison Steel Castings Company. Their oldest son, Hubert Wayne, married Linda Sue Drummond, daughter of David P. and Dorothy Drummond, on February 2, 1968. Hubert Hudson died in Florida on May 4, 1993 and Thelma passed away in Indianapolis on July 16, 1996.
