This collection includes tintype photograph of Isaac and David Leap in Indiana circa 1860. There is also an accompanying envelope which carried the photograph from bookseller Raoul Renault in Quebec, Canada to museum curator Verne Patty in Carmel, Indiana.

Biographical Note

These individuals are most likely the same ones in the photograph:

Isaac Chauncey Leap was born in 1810 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to John Wesley (1735–1845) and Margaret (Crow) Leap. He had several siblings and half-siblings, including Gabriel (1778–1877), Catherine (1784–1860), John Wesley, Jr. (1789–1875), Samuel W. (1795–1884), David (1909-1890), Jerusha (1811–1891), Sarah (1812-1899), and Andrew Jackson (1814-1891). The family moved to Switzerland County, Indiana when he was 7 years old. He married Perrilla Todd on December 23, 1835 in Switzerland County, Indiana and they had 8 children, including William David (1837–1912), Harriet A., Mary M., James R. P., Rosanna, Sarah E., and Barbara. The Leaps moved to a farm in Perry Township, Boone County between 1838 and 1841. Perrilla Leap died before 1849. Isaac Leap remarried twice more; first to Nancy Jane Mccalister on February 3, 1849, then after her death, to Eliza Smith on May 28, 1852. Isaac and Eliza Leap had 7 children, including Virginia, Mary Francis (1855–1928), Sarah A., Martha A., Eliza E., and Andrew J. Leap was a member of a local Baptist church and was licensed to preach in 1873. He was injured at Swock and Sullivan's tile factory in September 1886 and suffered from ill health thereafter. Leap died of malarial fever on June 9, 1888 in Boone County and is buried in Mount Tabor Cemetery in Fayette, Indiana.

David Leap was born to John Wesley (1735–1845) and Margaret (Crow) Leap in 1809 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Switzerland, County, Indiana and worked as a farmer. Leap married Mary "Polly" Woolen (1814–1878) on May 22, 1833 in Switzerland County. They had nine children, including Isaac (1834–1913), Susan Ann (1836-1880), Elizabeth (1839-1907), John Franklin (1840–1920), Edward (1844–1909), David S. (1846–1915), Martha Susanna (1849-1879), Mary M. (1851–1868), and Peter (1855–1942). Polly Leap died in 1878 and is buried in Mount Tabor Cemetery. David Leap lived 12 more years. He lived with members of his extended family in Boone County. Leap died in August 1890 and was buried with his wife in Mount Tabor Cemetery.
