Scope and Contents

This collection includes a photograph with black-and-white snapshot photographs taken by Marvin E. Coffman in Japan during Fall 1945 after the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II. The photographs concern scenes and people in Japan where Coffman was stationed, including American soldiers and military police, Japanese civilians, buildings, local sights, army checkpoints and sites, and destruction from the war. There are also a few pages of Japanese and American stamps.

Biographical Note

Marvin Eugene Coffman was born on September 13, 1922 to Linden Arthur (1900–1991) and Edith Mae (Biddle) Coffman (1903–1993) in Hillisburg, Clinton County, Indiana. He had three younger brothers, Glenn Hollis (1927–2015), Frederick Keith (1929–2015), and Maurice Max (1939-). Coffman attended Frankfort High School in Frankfort, Indiana during 1938-1941 (8th-11th grade), completing 3 years of high school. He worked in manufacturing, as a helper at Ingram-Richardson Manufacturing Company in 1942 and a semi-skilled laborer the fabrication of metal products for Ushio Manufacturing Company. Coffman registered for the draft on Jun 30, 1942.

He married Dorothy Delores Robertson (1925–1996) on October 2, 1943 in Boone County, Indiana and they had four children: Aldene Kay (1947-), Thomas Jay (1951–2016), Marsha May (1955–2020), and Linden Ray (1957-). Coffman enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army on January 31, 1945 in Indianapolis. He was stationed at various military bases, including Fort McClellan, Alabama; Fort Riley, Kansas; and Fort Ord, California and in Company C, 7th Regiment. He served Military Police (M.P.) in the U.S. Army during and after the end of World War II. Coffman was stationed in Tokyo, Japan after the war. He was discharged from the army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on October 9, 1946. Coffman worked as a driver for Coulter-Smock Company in 1954 and meter reader for the Frankfort City Light and Power Plant in 1960. He died on September 6, 2016 in Franfort and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery there.
