Scope and Contents
This collection includes 20 black-and-white panoramic photographs taken at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi ranging from 1917 to 1918 regarding companies of soldiers from the 38th Division of the U.S. Army at the training camp during World War I. The images taken by Robb and Carleton of Hattiesburg in November 1917 show Companies A, B and C of the 139th Machine Gun Battalion; Company L of the 4th Indiana Infantry; Companies D, E, G, I, K and L of the 151st Regiment; Companies C, D and E of the 152nd Regiment; and the 1st Indiana Field Hospital unit. There are also photographs of the living quarters for the 151st and 152nd Regiments, 137th and 139th Field Artilleries, and 139th Machine Gun Battalion, as well as stables for the 137th Field Artillery, which were taken by Robb and Cornwell of Hattiesburg during May-June 1918. The latter also photographed Company B of the 151st Regiment on May 31, 1918.

Historical Note
Camp Shelby is a military base that was established in 1917 after the United States entered World War I. It is located military post at the southern boundary of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on United States Highway 49. The post was named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky, by the 38th Division, which was the first to train at there.
The 38th Infantry Division is one of the eighteen divisions of the United States Army, and one of eight National Guard divisions. After the U.S. entered the First World War in 1917, the division was formed from National Guard from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Indiana at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. The division's special designation as "Cyclone Division" was decided upon when its training camp was damaged during a tornado. The division was comprised of the 149th, 150th, 151st and 152nd Infantry Regiments; 137th, 138th and 139th Machine Gun Battalions; 137th, 138th and 139th Artillery Regiments (63rd Field Artillery Brigade); 113th Trench Mortar Battery; 113th Engineer Regiment and Train; 113th Field Signal Battalion; 113th Ammunition Train; 113th Supply Train; 113th Train Headquarters and Military Police; and the 149th, 150th, 151st and 152s Ambulance Companies and Field Hospitals of the 113th Sanitary Train.
The 38th Diviision was deployed to the Le Mans area of France in late 1918 toward the end of the war, with the division broken up to fill in gaps in combat formations. After the division's demobilization following the war, it was reconstituted and reorganized in the National Guard on March 16, 1923. Presently, the 38th Division is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and contains Army National Guard units from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Delaware, Michigan, Tennessee and other states.
