Biographical / Historical

William Johnston Elliott was born August 24, 1810 in Butler County, Ohio, the son of James and Margaret Elliott. He married Mary L. Taylor in 1834 and they had 6 children. He twice served as sheriff of Butler County and then entered the hotel business. Following the death of his wife in 1849, he moved to Cincinnati and there met and married Charlotte Tuttle, daughter of the proprietor of the City Hotel. In 1850, he moved with his family to Indianapolis and took charge of the Palmer House (later known as the Occidental) and later established several other hotels, including the Grand Hotel and the Sherman House. He was a Douglas Democrat, but became a Republican during the Civil War and was a close and trusted friend of Governor Oliver P. Morton. He was appointed by Governor Morton as a special agent of the state to visit the regiments of Indiana volunteers and the sick and wounded soldiers in hospitals to render aid and assistance as circumstances required. Following the war, he continued to live in Indianapolis and passed away there at the age of 79 on May 12, 1890.
