"When Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1932, the federal government assumed the burden of providing relief, partly through direct payments and partly through payments to state and local governments. Federal funds were welcome – indeed necessary – but Maine's response to the federal government was conditioned by a long history of localism and self-reliance.
[Democratic Governor] Brann was reelected in 1934, but two years later Democrats were swept out of office at the height of the national party's political prospects."
