Historical Note

One of the major issues of the election of 1896 was unlimited silver coinage versus the gold standard. Gold coins and paper money backed by gold had stable value and restricted supply. Those in support of the gold standard believed that silver coinage would result in fluctuating values and loss of credit. "Silverites" argued that adding silver coins to the supply would lead to higher wages and profits.
