This collection includes radio interview transcripts, subject index cards, and correspondence from Nellie M. Coats ranging from 1859-1973 regarding interviews and correspondence. Notable interviews include Richard G. Lugar (Indiana Senator), Landrum Bolling (Earlham College president), James E. Haralson (Indiana School for the Blind principal), Monsignor Francis J. Reine (Marian College president), and Hal L. Royce (Secretary-Manager of Indiana State Fair). Notable items include a Chinese Christmas card and a German Christmas card.

Biographical Note

Nellie M. Coats was born around the late 1890's in Battle Ground, Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University, where she worked at the library, and received her master's degree from the University of Illinois. She was a librarian at the John Shepard Wright Memorial Library of the Indiana Academy of Science and she produced a weekly half-hour radio show interviewing leading local personalities on WFMS and WAIV. She was the chief of the Catalogue Division of the Indiana State Library for 35 years, until she retired in 1958. She also gave sightseeing tours of Indianapolis as a hobby. She received the Certificate of Achievement from former Mayor Richard G. Lugar and was named Woman of the Year in 1962 by the Hoosier Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television. She passed away in 1977 at age 88.
