This collection includes black-and-white photographs of May Coots Hanna and her nephew Mark Hanna in Indianapolis, Indiana and the United States, ranging from 1920 to 1967. A single photograph of May Hanna's husband Judge Charles Hanna, with a note to his nephew Mark, is also included, as well as also two newspaper clippings, one of which is an obituary for May Hanna. There is also a color snapshot of Indiana University President Herman B. Wells, his mother, and Art Department chairman Mrs. Fletcher in May 1959.

Biographical Note

May Lillian Coots was born on June 15, 1878 to Charles Edwin (1851–1930) Coots, Indianapolis Fire Chief (1902-1913), and Sarah Jeanette (Morton) Coots (1852–1918) in Indiana. She had a younger brother, Howard M. (1883–1965). During World War I, she worked with the Young Men's Christian Association and Red Cross in Indianapolis. Coots married Charles Thomas Hanna (1869–1931) on October 28, 1903 in Marion County, Indiana. He was a lawyer and Marion County Superior Court judge who died in 1931. May Hanna was an associate member of the Indiana Artists Club and the Matinee Musicale, and a charter member of the Women's Department Club and the Indiana Federation of Art Clubs. She died on March 7, 1967 at Winona Memorial Hospital and was buried with her husband in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Charles Thomas Hanna was born on December 27, 1869 to George Adams (1831–1901) and Eliza (Springsteen) Hanna (1839–1927) in Fortville, Indiana. He had 3 siblings: Anna Mary (1857-1932), Eldon (Enoch) Boaz (1858-1917), and Ida E. (1864-1927). Hanna became a lawyer, graduating from Indiana University's law school in 1897. He had a couple of short-lived partnerships before forming the law firm Hanna and Daily with Thomas A. Daily, a partnership that lasted 32 years. Hanna married May Lillian Coots (1878-1967) on October 28, 1903. He was appointed a judge of the Marion County Superior Court in 1907. Hanna died of heart failure at his home in Indianapolis on July 29, 1931 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Mark (Marcus) A. Hanna was born on November 25, 1899 to Eldon (Enoch) Boaz (1858-1917) and Ella B. (Rash) Hanna (1865-1923) in Indiana. He had an older sister, Leah Hope, and a half-brother, Clarence Cummins, from his mother's second marriage. He worked at Kingan and Company during World War I. Hanna graduated from Indiana University with an A.B. in English, where he was an athlete in baseball, football, and track and a member of Sigma Chi and Sigma Delta Chi. In 1920, Hanna worked as a page in the Indiana House of Representatives. He represented the Indianapolis Athletic Club at the National Amateur Atheltic Union Championships in Newark, New Jersey in 1922. He moved to Attleboro, Massachusetts where he worked as a sales manager. Hanna married teacher Josephine McAlexander in Indianapolis on January 16, 1926 and they lived in Attleboro. Hanna remarried in 1932, to Marjorie L. in North Attleboro. He later served as a major in the U.S. Army during World War II.
