Historical Note
The Indiana State Medical Association celebrated its centennial at the organization's Centennial Convention at the Murat Shrine Temple in Indianapolis, Indiana during September 26-29, 1949. The convention had several highlights, including exhibits featuring the latest medical advancements and the history of the profession and its progress from 1849, the year of the organization's founding, to 1949, which was held in the Egyptian Room; a women's dinner with author Emily Kimbrough; televised surgical operations and clinical procedures; nationally recognized Hoosier-born or Hoosier-trained speakers; annual recreational activities such as skeet shooting and a golf tournament; a banquet with a giant cake at the Indiana Roof Ballroom on top of the Indiana Theatre (now the Indiana Repertory Theatre); and a concert given by the B and O Glee Club of Baltimore, Maryland at the Murat Theatre. The immediate past president (Dr. Augustus P. Haus of New Albany), current president (Dr. C. S. Black of Warren), and president-elect (Dr. Alfred Ellison of South Bend) of the organization were in attendence. According to the Indianapolis Times, "more than 2000 Hoosier doctors and their wives" attended the event.
