Biographical Note

William Frederick Pepper was born on June 9, 1887 to Louis Richard (1849–1915) and Caroline E. (Heinemann) Pepper (1852–1927) in Peppertown, Franklin County, Indiana. He had 10 siblings including Gustav, Mathilda "Tillie" M., Victor, Floria, Herman, Charlotta "Lotta" E., Augustus "August" F., and Anita B. The family lived on a farm in Salt Creek in Franklin County where they grew tobacco and sorghum and attended St. Nicholas Lutheran Church in Peppertown. Pepper married Anna Catherine "Kate" Reifel (1892–1977) on September 15, 1917 and they had two children: Carol Louisia (1920-1996) and Claude Richard "Dick" (1929-1992). The family lived in Fresno, California before returning to Franklin County, Indiana, this time moving to Brookville. Pepper died suddenly on May 31, 1951 in Brookville and was buried in Shrine of Memories Mausoleum in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana.

Anna Catherine "Kate" Reifel was born to George Philip and Catherine Louise (Hortsman) Reifel on August 8, 1892 in Franklin County, Indiana. She had four older siblings, including John P., Mary Ann, Francis "Frank" Henry, and William Charles "Sam."

Carol Louisia Pepper (1920-1996), daughter of William F. and Kate Pepper, married Burt Austin Volkening (1924–2011) on July 21, 1946. They lived in St. Clair, Michigan. Her brother, Claude Richard "Dick" Pepper (1929-1992), lived in Brookville, Indiana and married Velma Jean Hoffman on August 26, 1950.
