Biographical Note

Earl Lawrence Hummer was born in December 1883 to Lawrence W. (1858–1941) and Elizabeth (Dice) Hummer (1859–1944) in St. Joseph County, Indiana. He married Mary Ethel Headley (1884–1980) of White County on October 6, 1908 and they had two daughters, Gladys Ellen (1909-2000) and Virginia Carolyn. Hummer worked as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in South Bend for many years. He had a long-abiding fascination with covered bridges and from the time of his retirement in 1947 until shortly before his death, the Hummers took trips around Indiana to photograph and record many of the state's covered bridges. Ethel Hummer later colored the black-and-white photographs using oil tints. Earl Hummer died on December 16, 1966 and was buried in Sumption Prairie Cemtery in South Bend, Indiana.
