This collection includes a leather-bound diary from Dumin Labertew in the United States, ranging from July 1864 to June 1865, regarding his service with Company B, 59th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The diary includes information on daily marching orders, living conditions, and activities, as well as an account of money owed to him by other soldiers.

Biographical / Historical

Dumin Labertew, (also found in records as Dunham Labertew, Donham Labertew, Dunhim Labertew, Dunham Lamberton, Dunim Lamberton, and Danim Lamberton) was born in Hamilton, Ohio on January 13, 1833. He was a farmer by trade and married Elizabeth Baldwin (1831-1906), with whom he had seven children. During the American Civil War, Labertew enlisted in 1861 and served with Company B, 59th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He earned the rank of sergent over the course of the war, and did not muster out until the war was over. Labertew returned to farming after the war. He died on October 15, 1921 in McClean, Illinois.
