Historical Note

Star City is located in Van Buren Township, Pulaski County, Indiana and the town's elevator was started in 1861. Matthew H. Dunn bought the elevator in 1867 and operated it by horse power. In 1901, Thomas L. Reed purchased the elevator and replaced the old building with a larger facility that was powered by a steam engine. Reed's son-in-law John C. Phillips was his partner and became owner of the grain elevator following Reed's death in July 1914. The elevator was destroyed by fire in September 1915 and was rebuilt that same year. In 1944, it was converted to electricty. Phillips continued to own and operate the grain elevator until his death in July 1944, then his daughter Julia and sons William and George ran the elevator until around 1952 when it was sold to Guy Wilson, Robert Ortman, and Vernon Payne. The elevator was again destroyed by fire in April 1954, rebuilt, then sold to the Farm Bureau Cooperative Association of Winamac in May 1956.
