Putnam County, Indiana was established in 1822 and was named for Israel Putnam, a general in the American Revolution. Russellville, in Russell Township, is located in the northwest corner of the county and was laid out in 1828. Jacob Durham (1805-1864) was an early resident of Russellville and set up the first blacksmith shop. He also became a successful merchant and served as postmaster and justice of the peace before retiring in 1860.
