Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a scrapbook compiled by Emma C. Gray regarding the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 and the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, programs, delegate ribbons, and other mementos. Most of the items in the scrapbook range from 1935 to 1956, but there is a bookplate on the inside front cover that notes that the scrapbook was presented in memory of Emma Gray at the GAR State Day held at the Indiana State Soldiers'Home in Lafayette on October 11, 1974.

Biographical Note

Emma Caroline Wooley was born February 21, 1879 in Parke County, Indiana to Milford Franklin and Rachel (Robertson) Wooley and lived most of her life in Jackson Township, Fountain County, Indiana. She graduated from Wallace High School in 1900 and married William H. Gray in September 1901. The Grays owned and operated a farm east of Wallace all their married life and were the parents of three children. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Wallace Christian Church, Wallace Ladies Aid, the Jackson Township Extension Club and the Daughter of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865. Her father was a veteran of Company K, 43rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry. She passed away at the age of 95 on April 16, 1974.
