Biographical Note
Henry McCabe Dowling, son of Judge Alexander Dowling, was born July 4, 1872 in New Albany, Indiana, and a graduate of DePauw University and Harvard Law School. Dowling was an instructor at the Indiana University School of Law from 1905 to 1942. He was recognized as an authority on the lives of Washington and Lincoln. He was also regarded as an authority on the history of the United States Constitution.
Dowling was a partner in the law firm of Dowling and Dowling, with his son Addison. He specialized in corporate and probate law. Dowling was a member of the Indiana Railroad Commission, a forerunner of the Public Service Commission; and he subsequently served as a member of the PSC. He taught men’s Bible class at First Presbyterian Church. Dowling died on September 25, 1953.
