Historical Note

Different methods of marking livestock to established ownership have been used for thousands of years. A common type of marking in Indiana during the 19th century was earmarking, which included croping, cutting slits, cutting swallow forks, and cutting distinctive designs in the ears. Livestock owners would register their markings with the county of residence and these records were used to identify missing stock and settle disputes regarding ownership.
