Bartlett apprenticed as a blacksmith, then formed a partnership with another blacksmith, William Hollingsworth. The two men later purchased and operated a sawmill together before selling out in the spring of 1861. Bartlett engaged in farming for a few years before partnering with Hollingsworth in a merchantile business in Edwardsport in 1865. After seven years, Barlett became sole proprietor of the business. He married Mary Jane Killion in March 1860 and they had eight chidren together. Bartlett was married a third time in October 1899 to Flora Slinkard. Mr. Bartlett lived the remainder of his life in Edwardsport and passed away there at the age of 71 on January 30, 1906.
William Hollingsworth was born February 9, 1834 in Knox County, the son of Thomas and Amy (Keith) Hollingsworth. He married Sarah Azbell around 1860 and they had twelve children, with seven living to adulthood. Following his partnership with Bartlett, he engaged in other business pursuits, including farming and as a dealer in dry goods. Bartlett died in Edwardsport at the age of 74 on February 14, 1908.
