Scope and Contents
This collection includes two account books used by Dr. Andrew H. Phillips. Ranging from 1871 to 1888, the bulk of the entries are related to the doctor's medical practice, including the dates of medical service, medicines prescribed, name of disease or condition treated, and fee charged. The volumes were also used to record non-medical services such as loans, adminstration of estates, and sales of dry goods and groceries. Recipes for medicines are found written on the end sheets and back covers of both volumes.

Biographical Note
Andrew H. Phillips was born June 26. 1842 in Jefferson County, Indiana to William C. and Nancy (Hearn) Phillips. He served as a private with Company B, 137th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Phillips worked on the family farm before becoming a physician. In 1878, he was awarded the contract as Saluda Township physician. He married Elvira G. McKeand in December 1876 and they had one son, William R (1878-1956), who also became a doctor. Following Elvira's death, Phillips married Louise E. Giltner in 1887 and they had one son, Andrew J., who died in infancy. Dr. Phillips died at the age of 46 on September 8, 1888.
