This collection includes original letters and photocopies from various Teter family members and others; military records; obituaries; newspaper clippings; stamps; currency; a Civil War diary; medals; an Indiana centennial medal; coins; paper currency; a lock of human hair; cross-stitch pictures; and a leather wallet ranging from circa 1847 to 1988 regarding Teter family genealogy, family business, Indiana history and the U.S. Civil War.

There is also an oversize folder containing Teter family genealogy, circa 1988; Railroad Company mortgage, 1875; obituary, 1886; American Flag House Roll of Honor document, 1911; and a clipping circa 1886 (OBD007).

Biographical Note

Elisha Teter emigrated to New Jersey in the United States from Germany or Holland around the time of the American Revolution. Around 1796 he relocated to Pennsylvania and later moved to Ohio, where he owned many acres. He had a son, John. He likely died in Ohio.

Elisha's brother(?), Samuel, was born to John George Teter, January 1735 in Virginia. He served as a captain in the Revolutionary War and married Mary Dodridge in 1770 in Pennsylvania. The couple settled first in Pennsylvania, then in Ohio, where they built the first cabin in Chillicothe. They had five children: Samuel II, George, Mary, John and Daniel. Teter died Ocober 16, 1823 in Marysville, Ohio and was buried in Milford Center, Ohio. Mary Teter died in 1838.

Samuel Teter II, son of Samuel and Mary Teter, was born in Bedford, Pennsylvania on August 22(?), 1770. He married Rebecca Ford and they had three children: Mary (1791-1871), Malinda (1795-1871), and Samuel (b. 1808). Teter died August, 1832 and was buried in the Twin Township Cemetery in Bourneville, Ohio.

John Teter, son of Samuel and Mary Teter, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on January 11, 1777 and he married Mary Hare Edmiston. They had the following children: Benjiman (b. 1801); Elizabeth (1803-1878); Nancy (b. 1804); Mary (b. 1806); Hannah (1808-1891); Thomas Edward (1810); John E. (b. 1812); Christina (1814-1905); Samuel E. (b. 1817); George (1819); Charity (b. 1821); Bethena (1823-1873); Wesley (1824-1903); and Amous (b. 1826). John died September 22, 1844 and was buried in the Teeter Cemetery, Ross County, Ohio.

Samuel Teter III, son of Samuel and Rebecca Teter, was born December 6, 1808 and died March 2, 1900. He married Mary Ann Gray in Ohio in 1830 and they had 3 children: Sarah E. (1833-1877); Elizabeth (1836-1923); Nancy H. (1845-1912).

Thomas Edward Teter, son of Mary and John Teter, worked with livestock as a young man and engaged in the sock business for himself, first in Ohio, then in Stony Creek, Hamilton County, Indiana. He worked for a collection business, then bought Mr. Bond out. He later bought land in Minnesota and moved to Noblesville, Indiana in 1860, where he worked in the flour milling business with his son Newton. Teter was a director of the Midland Railroad. He also was a founder of the Masonic Lodge in Noblesville and ws one of the oldest Masons in the county during his lifetime. He married Mary R. Rockhold on January 2, 1838 in Ross County, Ohhio and they had the following children: Hannah R. (b. 1838; died in infancy); Charity (1841; died in infancy); Joseph R. (b. 1843); George (b. 1845; Newton; unknown twin daughters (b. 1853; both died in infancy). Teter died March 12, 1903 and was buried in the Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

George Teter, son of Thomas Edward and Mary Teter, was born in Ross County, Ohio. He was very young when his parents moved to Indiana. In 1860, he began working in the family grain mill while attending school in Noblesville. During the U.S. Civil War, enlisted in the 75th Indiana infantry in 1861 but the roster was full so he only served 2 weeks. He then enlisted in the 39th Indiana infantry but was refused due to a knee injury received while hunting wild turkeys. He then enlisted in Company B, 136th Indiana regiment and was honorably discharged September 2, 1864. Afterwards, he attended a business college in Indianapolis, Indiana, then spent one year at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Teter returned to work at the grain mill, leaving in 1870. He married Mary Alice Paswater on October 31, 1869 in Noblesville and they had the following children: Edward Thomas, Lora, and Caroline. After 1870, he worked in the furniture and undertaking business for four years. The family moved to Bangor, Iowa where Teter worked in the mercantile business and was a postmaster. He moved to Colorado briefly, then returned to Indiana, first Clinton County, then Hamilton County, purchasing the Conner Mill near Noblesville. They family then moved to Tipton, Indiana in 1887. Teter was active in the Grand Army of the Republic and served on the staff of Commander-in-Chief Stewart. He died November 21, 1927 and was buried in Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville. Joseph R. Teter, son of Thomas E. and Mary Teter, brother of George, was born April 14, 1843. During the U.S. Civil War, he enlisted in Co. D of the 101st Indiana on August 18, 1862 and was mustered in September 5, 1862. While in the service of the 19th Indiana Battery, he received a wound in the knee on September 19th at the battle at Chickamauga, Tennessee. Teter was taken prisoner, then paroled and died October 22, 1863 in a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Edward Thomas Teter, son of George and Mary Alice Teter, was born on February 5, 1871 in Noblesville. He read law and was admitted to the bar at the age of 19, when he began practicing in Tipton and became deputy prosecuting attorney. He married Mary Cleveland Spitler October 14, 1891 in Rensselaer, Indiana. They had the following children: Eugene Austin (b. 1892); Paul Edmundson (b. 1896); and Mary Virginia (b. 1907; died in infancy). Teter and his second wife, Mildred Louise Brite, had two children: Edward Thomas, Jr. (1940-1941) and Thomas Brite (1941-2004). He died November 19, 1958 in Vineland, New Jersey.

Lora Teter, born November 3, 1872, daughter of George and Mary Alice Teter, was married December 27, 1893 to J. W. Hubbard, a lawyer and teacher. They had two children, Helen (b. 1894) and Alice (b. 1895?).

Caroline Teter, born February 3, 1878, daughter of George and Mary Alice Teter, was born in Bangor, Iowa and was graduated from the Indianapolis Business College and married Ettie Emerson on August 1, 1901.

Eugene Austin Teter, son of Edward Thomas and Mary Teter, married Martha Anne Brown on December 4, 1920 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He served in World War I. Teter died on January 3, 1993 and was buried in the Rogers Cemetery, Welch, Oklahoma.

Paul Edmundson Teter, son of Edward Thomas and Mary Teter, married Sidney Pendleton in April, 1915 at Benton, Arkansas. They had two children, Paul Edmundson, Jr. (b. 1916) and Anne Pendleton (b. 1926). Teter died November 5, 1973 and was buried in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Tillmans Corner, Alabama.

Newton Teter, born on November 10, 1848 in Hamilton County, Indiana, son of Thomas E. and Mary Teter, was born in Hamilton County, Indiana. He attended Indiana University for three years, then returned to the family mill business. He then became an agent for the Midland Railroad in Noblesville until 1885. Teter then farmed and worked in livestock. He married Susan Ellen Adkins on November 10, 1869 in Bloomington, Indiana. They had the following children: Sanford Fortner, Mary Rockhold, William Jerome, and Walter Allen. Teter was active in the Independent Order or Odd Fellows. He died in 1928 and was buried in the Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville.

Sanford Fortner Teter, born May 25, 1871, son of Newton and Susan Teter, was a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington. He married Nellie Showers, with whom he had two children: Mary Louise Teter Hare-Carter (1900-1969) and William Showers Teter (1909-1964). He was a member of numerous clubs including Masons. Teter was the secretary and treasurer of the Showers Bros. He also served as a city councilman for Bloomington and a valued public speaker. Teter died February 20, 1928 and was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington.

Mary Rockhold Teter, born July 1, 1874, daughter of Newton and Susan Teter, was married to Harmon Williams on May 1, 1895 in Hamilton County, Indiana. They had one child, Martin, and lived in New York in 1920. She was widowed at the time of her death Mar. 7, 1922 in Noblesville, Indiana.

William Jerome Teter, born December 17, 1879, son of Newton and Susan Teter, studied at Indiana University, Bloomington and worked for various coal companies. He married Mae Belle Cash on April 30, 1907, and they had a child who died in infancy. He owned his own coal company. Teter was a member of numerous organizations, including Masons and Scottish Rite. He died July 28, 1935 and was buried in the Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville.

Walter Allen Teter, born September 22, 1888, son of Newton and Susan Teter, married Lulu M. Colborn (who attended Indiana University) on November 20, 1911 in Hamilton County and they had two children: Robert A. Teter (1914?-) and Mary Susan Teter Venable (1920-1986). Teter was a commercial salesman for a coal company. He died in 1968 and was buried in the Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
