Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, clippings, histories, and other papers from Bartholomew County, Indiana, ranging from 1917 to 1920, regarding the county's residents and their experiences during World War I. The bulk is correspondence from local soldiers, some of which were hand-transcribed to ensure legibility.

Two folders concern women's war work, particularly the correspondence, circulars, papers, notes, clippings, newsletters, a pamphlet, and ephemera from Vida Newsom, ranging from 1918 to 1919 and undated. Correspondents included Luella McWhirter, Julia C. Henderson, Josephine Herschell, Alice Foster McCulloch, Grace Dixon, and Eleanor Wilson McAdoo,

Historical Note

During World War I, Bartholomew County, Indiana engaged in a variety of war work activities, including concerving food, buying liberty bonds, donating to organizations which supported troops overseas and at home. Vida Newsom was appointed chairman of the Bartholomew County Women's Liberty Loan Committee during the Fourth Liberty Loan period in 1918. After the war's end, an effort was made to collect the county's history during the war, which included writing histories of various organizations and events and compiling letters from local soldiers.
