Biographical note

William Cumback was born near Mount Carmel, Franklin County, Indiana on March 24, 1829. He graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and taught school for two years. After studying law at the Cincinnati Law School, Mr. Cumback was admitted to the bar and practiced in Greensburg, Indiana in 1853. He was elected as a Republican to the 34th Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857), but was not reelected in 1856. During the Civil War, William was appointed paymaster in the Army. He was a State Senator in 1866; Lieutenant Governor of Indiana in 1868; United States revenue collector 1871-1883; and trustee of De Pauw University. He died in Greensburg on July 31, 1905.
