Scope and Contents

This collection contains a daybook and ledger owned by Samuel W. Gaar of Richmond, Indiana. The bulk of the entries range from 1883 to 1884 and seem to be practice entries for his school work at the Richmond Business College. The ledger includes several pages with entries ranging from 1886 to 1888 regarding expenses paid to O. Yates, W.P. Lough, Jason Oakley and others during the construction of Mr. Gaar's home. The ledger also has one additional page that records $17.50 for "one suit of clothes" and other debits and credits for unknown worker from 1894.

Biographical note

Samuel W. Gaar was born in Richmond, Indiana on March 3, 1863, the son of Abram and Agnes Gaar. He was a descendant of the founders of the Gaar-Scott Company, a Richmond manufacturer of steam engines and threshing machines from 1842-1911. He attended public schools and graduated from the Richmond Business College in 1884. He married Mary E. Matthews on December 24, 1885 and they had one daughter. He began his long career in banking as a bookkeeper for the Second National Bank of Richmond in 1885. He was promoted to assistant cashier in 1895 and cashier in 1897. In 1914, he became the president of the bank and continued in this position until his death at the age of 69 on May 31, 1932.
