Biographical Note
Ira Joy Chase was the 22nd governor of Indiana. Born in Monroe County, New York on December 7, 1834, he served in the 19th Illinois Regiment during the Civil War and was discharged after a year due to ill health. The Christian ministry brought him to Indiana in 1867 and Chase served as pastor for several churches in the state. In 1886, he was appointed chaplain of the Indiana Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). Chase was elected as lieutenant -governor of Indiana in 1888 and assumed the governorship in November, 1891 when Governor Alvin Hovey passed away. He lost the gubernatorial election of 1892 and left office on January 9, 1893. Governor Chase married Rhoda J. Castle (1833-1926) and they had four children. He passed away on May 11, 1895.
