Biographical / Historical

George Augustus Bicknell was born on May 15, 1846 in Batsto, New Jersey to George A. and Elizabeth Bicknell. His family moved to Lexington, Scott County, Indiana in 1846 and then to New Albany, Indiana in 1851. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy on December 2, 1861 and graduated in 1866. He married Annie Sloan on May 22, 1878. He served on numerous ships and stations, including as commander of the steamer Niagara during the Spanish-American War. He was promoted to the rank of rear admiral on February 8, 1907 and retired from service the next year on May 15, 1908. Following his retirement, he returned to New Albany and was an active member of the community until his death on January 27, 1925.
