Scope and Contents

This collection is a daily journal kept by William Frederick August Bernhamers from January 1st, 1868 to December 31st, 1868. Each entry contains the weather for that particular day and can last for a couple of words or a couple of sentences describing William’s activities for the day. The journal is entirely handwritten and there is also a listing of finances at the end of the journal divided by month.

Biographical Note

William Frederick August Bernhamers was born around 1849 in Indiana to parents who were from Prussia. His wife, Louise, was born around 1853 in Louisiana to parents from Baden, a region of modern day Germany. The two were married sometime between 1870 and 1880. William worked as a lawyer for most of his life and advertised in the Indianapolis city directory as a lawyer who “makes a specialty of examining abstracts and supplying defects in titles from official records throughout the state.” His office was at 94 E. Court Street in the city.
