Scope and Contents
This collection includes an account book used by Joel Hiatt for his harness and saddlery business located in Milton, Indiana from June 1843 to September 1844. The record book was later used by someone as a scrapbook and contains newspaper clippings ranging from 1901 to 1926 and undated regarding deaths, social events, Milton and Indiana history, national politics and other miscellaneous topics. A number of the clippings are attached to the pages and obscure the account entries, but the bulk of them are loose and are housed separately within the collection. A few pages in the account book also have notes regarding Milton Chapter 303, Order of the Eastern Star (circa 1906).

Biographical note
Joel Hiatt was born on July 18, 1807 in Guilford County, North Carolina to Benajah and Elizabeth Hiatt. In 1824, he moved with his family to Indiana and settled near Milton in Wayne County. He married Mathida Ferguson on November 1, 1829 and they had 8 children. He was a farmer and had a saddle and harness shop in Milton before moving his family to Salt Creek Valley, Leavenworth County, Kansas Territory in 1854. Mr. Hiatt died at the age of 75 on August 12, 1882.
