Scope and Contents

This collection includes two volumes containing information regarding patents compiled by Ezra T. Gilliland circa 1882. The first volume includes a list of inventors arranged chronologically by date and patent number, starting with E. R. Roe from 1848 (patent no. 5.612) and ending with James G. Smith from 1882 (no. 258.681). In the second volume, Gilliland organizes the same inventors by categories: annunciators, electric lights, magneto-electric machines, electrical switches, telephones, and transmitters.

Biographical Note

Ezra T. Gilliland was born in 1846 in Cuba, Allegany County, New York to Robert and Caroline Gilliland. He began his career as a telegraph operator on the line of the Michigan Central on the Lake Shore railroad and went on to become a well-known inventor. The fundamental principles of the telephone switchboard were his invention and he constructed and operated the first telephone exchange in Indianapolis. While living in the capital city, he met Miss Lillian M. Johnson and they were married in 1880. He also started the Gilliland Electric Manufacturing Company in Indianapolis, but later moved the factory to Adrian, Michigan. He became acquainted with Thomas E. Edison while still in his youth and they became friends and business associates, working together on several inventions. Mr. Gilliland died of Bright’s disease at his home in Pelham Manor, West Chester County, New York on May 13, 1903.
