Biographical / Historical
John James Garver was born on February 14, 1845 at Silver Lake, Ohio to David and Elizabeth Garver. On January 31, 1862, he enlisted in the 71st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War and served almost four year before being mustered out on November 30, 1865. He returned home and worked for a few years as a druggist before beginning medical studies in 1870 under Dr. Oliver Cook of Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio Medical College in 1876 and after practicing for a short time in Dayton, moved to Indianapolis. He married Celista Jeannette "Nettie" Gable in 1881, but she died two years later. He later married Mary R. Heron in 1895 and they had one son. Besides his medical practice, Dr. Garver also served two terms as superintendent of the City Dispensary, was a member of the board of school commissioners, chaired the committee that built a new library building, and served on the pension board. He died at the age of 55 on December 13, 1900.
