This collection includes 7 daybooks used by Barnabas Coffin for his general store located in Economy, Indiana (1848-1859). Three of the daybooks are from his partnerships with Daniel B. Robbins (volume 5) and Joseph R. Cain (volume 6 and 7).

Biographical / Historical

Barnabas Coffin was born on March 1, 1809 in Guilford County, North Carolina to Joseph and Hannah Coffin. He married Mariam Worth in December 1829 and they had ten children. They moved to Wayne County, Indiana around 1840 and there he entered into the Merchantile and pork-packing businesses. He had several partners over the years, including his son-in-law Daniel B. Robbins and Joseph R. Cain. He removed to Indianapolis around 1863 and became a prominant businessman there. He passed away at the age of 67 on July 15, 1876.
