Historical Note

U.S. Route 6 was dedicated as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway in the 1940s in honor of the Civil War veterans' organization. Indiana was the 8th state to do so on May 20, 1946 in Hammond, Indiana. From 1936 to 1964, the highway ran from Long Beach, California to Provincetown, Massachusetts, when it was the longest highway in the country. The route has been modified several times and currently terminates in Bishop, California.
