Historical Note
The Feast of the Hunters' Moon is a weekend festival and historical reenactment of life in an 18th-century French fort and trading post held at the Fort Ouiatenon Historic Park, which contains a 452-sq. ft. replica of a fort called the blockhouse, in West Lafayette, Indiana. The event has been held each October by the the Tippecanoe County Historical Association since 1966, excepting 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the festival, participants reenact the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans which took place at Fort Ouiatenon in the mid-1700s and historical interpreters educate attendees about life and culture of the period. Participants dress up as 18th-century French soldiers, settlers, and Native Americans who lived in this region. Period foods such as rabbit stew, voyageur stew, and venison sausage are sold their while the program includes music, dancing, trade demonstrations, and reenacted military maneuvers.
