Historical Note

The funeral train conveying the late President Abraham Lincoln over 1,600 miles from Washington, D.C. to his home at Springfield, Illinois departed the U.S. capital on April 21, 1865 and stopped at 11 cities along the route, allowing American citizens to mourn and pay their respects. On May 1, 1865, the train stopped at Michigan City, Indiana where a 14-foot memorial arch sat over the railroad tracks. There locals held an impromptu funeral during a stop that lasted less than an hour before the train departed. The train had stopped to pick up a 100-member committee from Chicago. Lincoln was buried 3 days later in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
