Historical Note
USS President Grant was originally built in 1907 for the Hamburg American Packet Steamship Co. to serve as a trans-Atlantic passenger ship. It was interned in New York in 1914 and seized there on April 6, 1917 when the United States entered World War I. It wsa commissioned as the President Grant (SP-3014) on August 2, 1917 with Commander J. P. Morton in command. The ship served as a troop transport and made 16 round trips between New York and Frnech ports. President Grant was transferred from the navy to the army on October 6, 1919.
